we here at gawker media have taken a .... "redistribute the wealth" stance on articles. Asking for compensation is for greedy capitalist pigs.

To be honest, while in theory this seems right there is a couple of reasons why it can't be. A lot of stuff get's shared to the front page by a bunch of different users.

Tom gets "paid" by being able to promote his company/services through his writing. It was through his posts that I found out about his consultation services and purchased them to find my dream car that I am absolutely loving (thanks again man!). That in itself can be considered payment enough.

Now if they wanted him to write for them regularly ala Doug Demuro then I can see where some compensation could be provided. If I'm wrong please feel free to chime in Tom.

Let's remember that Tom gets "free" advertising every time that his posts are featured. While I don't disagree, I'm not sure he quite gets the numbers that we believe he deserves (if these numbers are accurate: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/stats/graph/un… )

The recruits program is looking for 300k unique views per month. Which is a heck of a milestone.

I am very much in support of paying contributors when their article gets posted to the FP. That being said the way Kinja works they are able to supplement Jalopnik with articles from Oppositelock, or from others, for free and there isn't much you can do about it except be grateful. I'm sure there's a clause somewhere in the terms and services that states that, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

While I certainly won't complain the problem with that model is Jalopnik flips so many articles I'm afraid this would de-incentivize the editors fro promote all the great content from Oppo and other personal blogs. IMO what makes Jalopnik superior to other auto-blogs is not only to they have top-notch paid writers they have the ability to utilize great user generated content. I would hate for that to change.

He's a contributor on Gizmodo. He's actually really awesome.

I understand that completely, but your work stands out from the pack, Tom.

Thanks for the insight - nice analytics you got there...

It is great promotion for his business, but I just feel like Tom's content and consistent contribution set him apart from the pack. Fractal Footwork is also on this level, and DasWauto gets the OPPO Excellence in Service Award.

Maybe it could kick in once your tenth article makes the front page, and continues after that. Incentives for creating good content can only make OPPO and Jalopnik better, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, as it stands now there really isn't an incentive for Gawker to do that. As long as users keep generating content for the simple satisfaction of their piece being featured there's no reason for them to pay anyone. As the novelty of that wears off though they may have to start compensating.

It is... it very much is.

The Game Cat was a character in the book Vurt. He was sort of a behind the scenes guy who knew the answers to nearly everything, but only shared what was necessary to share.

I loved Vurt, possibly more than any other book ever published (Zodiac, The Monkey Wrench Gang, The Diamond Age and a good majority of Jeff Noon's other works are up there as well).

I read a lot, I come across a lot, I compile knowledge and occasionally share it. I related to the character. Quite a bit.

Also, my apologies for being intentionally vague. I know I've shared the analytics before... and clearly they are available for public view, they just aren't advertised.
